From leading science to leading people to leading business

Transitioning from leading science to leading people often requires a shift in mindset: from being energized by the science of one’s own work to getting reward from advancing science through others.

Effective leaders know how to balance their own needs while supporting others to achieve their goals. They communicate with clarity, confidence, and authenticity. They build trust, invite other perspectives, and create the conditions for people to contribute at their best.

Real-World Application

Case Study: Bespoke Leadership Training for a Swiss Biotech

High-impact leadership development for resource-conscious, mission-driven teams.

Context

A mission-driven Swiss biotech wanted to equip its frontline managers with the leadership skills to amplify their impact and support their teams in reaching their full potential.

The organisation had already built a diverse, open, and solution-oriented team, with a culture shaped by ownership, collaboration across functions, and a flat hierarchy. With the resources and capabilities in place to execute its mission, the next priority was to strengthen leadership capability in a way that was practical, focused, and relevant to the company’s real working environment.

The Challenge: Create a leadership program that is powerful and tailored, while also being resource-sensitive — both in terms of training investment and time away from critical business work.

Program Objectives

Assess and develop core leadership competencies.

Enhance individual effectiveness and equip managers to support their teams.

Support managers in applying their learning in real-world scenarios.

Our Approach

nextImpact designed a tailored leadership development program built around three distinct phases to ensure lasting impact.

1

Pre-Training: Assessment and Insight

Participants completed the Harrison Assessment and received individual debriefs to identify their strengths, leadership competencies, key drivers, values, and development priorities.

The Harrison data did more than provide individual insight. Aggregated insights also informed the training design. This allowed the program to build on existing group strengths, identify development needs at team level, and tailor the learning journey to the realities of the organisation.

2

Training: Interactive On-Site Modules

The training phase consisted of three interactive on-site training days, designed to be practical, science-based, and directly connected to real leadership situations. The sessions drew from neuroscience, modern business leadership, and design thinking, using role play, real workplace scenarios, and peer reflection.

Module 1

Self-Management
& Leading Self

Module 2

Communication & Difficult Conversations

Module 3

Leading Others for Engagement & Performance

Practical Tool Example: The CLEAR Framework

A framework developed specifically for the group to structure and lead difficult conversations effectively:

R

Integration: Application & Impact

Participants applied the tools between modules, supported by worksheets, practical exercises, and reflection. After the program, a structured post-program assessment captured what participants valued, which concepts they were applying, and where further development could create additional impact.

The Impact

The assessment showed active application of key concepts including CLEAR, SCARF, feedback techniques, and Harrison insights. Participants described clear shifts in self-awareness, communication, listening, feedback delivery, confidence, and their overall leadership identity.

Why It Worked

This was not an off-the-shelf course.

The program succeeded because it combined:

  • Individual and group-level data to tailor the journey.
  • Science-backed concepts with real workplace scenarios.
  • An efficient format supporting learning transfer without overloading the organisation.
